Thursday’s Child

Description

Thursday’s Child is the solo debut album by the American vocalist Laury Boone Browning of The Boone Sisters fame, released on Lamb & Lion Records in 1987. The album was produced by Roby Duke.

A few years back when the Boone Sisters released First Class, it was clear that Debby wasn’t the only talented one. When Laury and husband Harry Browning released their collaborative project Push Back the Darkness, in 1984, we saw how she had matured artistically (most evident on gems like «When I Run To You»). Now in ’87, Laury Boone Browning has completely come into her own, offering a classy, inviting solo debut: Thursday’s Child.

One impression overrules all others at first listen of Thursday’s Child: Roby Duke. The snazzy, jazzy, warm feel of almost every cut has Duke written all over it… and it couldn’t be more appealing. Not that Roby’s production touch overshadow’s Laury’s vocals – just the opposite. It enhances the soulful, relaxed presentation she has mastered on these songs.

«Carpenter» presents a believer’s need for healing and mending, emotionally admitting “See these scars/ So much of me I gave away so foolishly…/ My heart ravaged by the very thing/ I thought would set me free.”

«Come Lift Him Up» is a majestic, beautiful, yet understated praise anthem bound to hit churches within a year – or well worthy to. The title song opens up the life of a young woman (we’d guess Laury) who has always been “standing in line,” and who is finally getting her turn.

Bryan Duncan steps in to duet with Laury on «Shower the People» a cover of the James Taylor classic. JT devotees shouldn’t be upset with this version, only slightly stepped up in tempo and sticking close to original harmonies and guitar parts.

With stirring vocals, flawless production, and rare sensitivity, Thursday’s Child is a project Laury Boone Browning can be very proud of… and one in which many listeners should delight. [Robyn Frazer, CCM, October 1987]
