He Can Make You Smile is an album by the American pop group The Good News Circle, released on Sonrise Mercantile in 1973. The album was recorded in the 16 track facilities of Studio A at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, Illinois. Produced by the Holy Spirit through Bob Laurent Evangelism. (Special thanks to Russ and Dave for their technical assistance and prayer support.) Mixed and mastered by Roger Wilhelmi. Strings arranged and conducted by Gregg Perry.
Vocals provided by Bob Laurent, Kathy Behnen, Kathy Brawley, Pam Murphy, and Ralph Hunt. Featuring Kathy Brawley on acoustic and electric piano as well as organ; Pam Murphy on flute; Ralph Hunt on acoustic and electric guitars; Steve Shafer on (second) acoustic guitar, electric piano, organ, and drums; Paul Fehrmann on bass, cabasa, as well as additional bass vocals, and Mark Minor and Mike Glickert on drums.
Trivia: Bob Laurent and Ralph Hunt actually sang together as the duet “Christopher & Solon” in college (Judson College).
Here’s one of those earlier albums that clearly leans more toward “contemporary gospel” and “easy listening” than “Jesus music”. Organ and flute help carry along «Lean On My Shoulder» (a decent original folk/pop number somewhere between Gamble Folk and Free Design) and the ballad «You Gotta Try». Outside of that though it’s mostly smooth vocals over string-arranged covers of things like «I Don’t Know Why Jesus Loved Me», «Let There Be Peace On Earth», «My Tribute», «Bright New World», etc. Also clean mellow versions of «Say I Do», «Sweet Song Of Salvation», «I Wish We’d All Been Ready» and «Little Country Church».
