Seasons Change

Description

Seasons Change is an album by the American singer and songwriter Ray Boltz, released on Word in 1992. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic Records, a division of Sony Music. The album was produced by Phil Naish (four tracks) as well as Steve Millikan and Ray Boltz (six tracks).

For years, Ray Boltz has been a best-selling and award-winning artist. But as sure as fall follows summer, ‘Seasons Change’ is a new musical direction for Boltz, one more akin to the adult contemporary/soft rock sounds of, say, Little River Band.

It’s not a crash/bang sort of change, but from the start of the lead cut, «Saving Grace», a mid-tempo rocker, you just feel Boltz itching to move into a more accessible musical vernacular. Other tracks on the album follow suit, such as «The Last Time I Fall» and the radio-friendly «What are We Doing Here?»

Boltz hasn’t abandoned the music that’s been so good to him, though; there are plenty of smooth ballads to go around. «Not Long Ago» is the closest of the bunch, though, to fitting musically into the category of “inspirational.” Tracks like «Mercy» and the breezy title cut would work just great in either an inspirational or adult contemporary context.

It’s important to note that production chores are split between Boltz and Steve Millikan on six cuts and Steven Curtis Chapman producer Phil Naish on four cuts. It’s to everyone’s credit that picking which songs are which isn’t all that easy; given the album’s transitional nature, it covers all the bases smoothly and cohesively.

Boltz should make some new friends with this album, and hopefully, long-time fans will continue to follow his as well. After all, it was an inevitable move: seasons change. [Chris Well, CCM, September 1992]
