Description
The part studio, part live effort Offerings, sub-titled A Worship Album, is the fourth album by the American rock band Third Day, released on Essential Records in July 2000, a division of Brentwood Music, manufactured and distributed in the US by Provident Music Distribution. The studio tracks (1, 2, 5, 7 and 10) were recorded by Jim Dineen, Karl Egsieker, and Ryan Williams at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia; with Monroe Jones producing. Additional programming and editing at Paragon Audio Productions in Franklin, Tennessee. The live concert tracks (3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 11) were recorded to ADAT by Andrew Stone in Columbus, Ohio on November 13, 1999 and in Lynchburg, Virginia on November 18, 1999, with track 11 recorded in St. Louis, Missouri on March 13, 1998. All live tracks produced by the band, except track 11 co-produced with Joey Canaday. (Live audio with Pro Audio Group in Ooltewah, Tennessee. No overdubs were recorded. A large portion of this project was recorded on Otari RADAR II.) Mixed by Jim Dineen assisted by Jed Hackett and Melissa Mattey at Sound Kitchen and The Castle Recording Studios in Franklin, Tennessee. The album features several new songs, a few covers (including “Agnus Dei” written by Michael W. Smith and “Saved” by Bob Dylan and Tim Drummond), and live versions of some of the band’s previous songs.
Following hot on the heels of their last studio record ‘Time‘, Third Day present us with their first worship album. Part studio (produced by Monroe Jones) and part live (recorded by the band themselves), ‘Offerings’ sees the American rockers in fine voice and strong focus, giving us 11 worship songs. The band have already taken tentative steps into worship territory with their recording of Michael W Smith’s «Agnus Dei» on a compilation album, and the incredible «Your Love, Oh Lord» on their recent album. Both tracks are captured live on this new album and indeed the live material works exceedingly well, as singer Mac Powell gently leads the crowd. Standout cuts include the epic «Thief», which portrays the crucifixion of Christ from the point of view of the thief on the cross next to him. Beginning with gentle piano this builds up into a powerful climax. Another standout is to take Bob Dylan’s 1980 classic «Saved» and turn it into a worship song, something that has also been done at the revival in Brownsville. It sounds great but then so does the whole of ‘Offerings’. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, August 2000]
