Description
Flap Your Wings is a studio album by the American alternative rock band The Choir, independently released on the band’s own label Galaxy21 Music in July 2000. Also released by Resolve Records, distributed by Diamante Music Group. As well licensed to, and manufactured for, BMG Direct. The album was recorded by band member Derri Daugherty at Neverland and The Mission in Nashville, Earful Sound in Brentwood, and Dark Horse Recording in Franklin, Tennessee; and was produced by band members Daugherty, Steve Hindalong, and Tim Chandler with additional production by Terry Taylor of Daniel Amos fame and Julian Kindred. Mixed by Julian Kindred at Earful and Dark Horse. Front cover painting by Michael Knott.
To the chagrin of Christian alt-rock fans everywhere, their longtime heroes, The Choir, pretty much called it a day in 1996, shortly after the release of its Dove Award-winning effort, Free Flying Soul.
That is until Flap Your Wings, recorded and produced independently by band leaders Steve Hindalong (drummer/primary lyricist) and Derri Daugherty (guitarist). It’s a decidedly delicate mix of the band’s best musical elements from it’s ’90s catalog, and although there’s not a whole lot new here musically, The Choir does throw in a few pleasant surprises. The plaintive, acoustic-based «Mercy Lives Here», for instance, is a rare showcase for Daugherty’s lyrics. Here the guitarist, while picking out a sad, folky melody, describes in living color the odd, temporal sights his eyes beheld in an Ohio bar – and the immediate knowledge that God’s spirit reaches, even places like that and those who dwell in them.
«Hey Gene», a tribute to the late Gene Eugene of Adam Again and Lost Dogs fame, is a bouncy, energetic pop-rock gem that remembers The Choir’s fallen friend in fond, bright, hopeful language (“Hey Gene, give Jesus a kiss for us”). It’s also the most rock-oriented tune on the record – and the obvious centerpiece.
One of the most beautiful songs on Flap Your Wings is The Choir’s newest worship-oriented creation, «Flowing Over Me», augmented by the band’s classic, moody instrumentation beneath a restrained vocal duet by Daugherty and guest Christine Glass. Add to that a remake of «Beautiful Scandalous Night» – a song that’s become a standard whorship selection in many Gen-X churches – and you have on your hands a fine record with more than enough shining moments. Tim Chandler Friends and Family Memorial Video.
Tim Chandler (February 3, 1960 – October 8, 2018). A song writer and bass guitar player, best known for his work with The Choir and Daniel Amos dies at 58.
In 1985 Chandler joined The Choir. He’s present on their 1986 EP Shades of Gray and their subsequent 1986 album Diamonds and Rain, but he really began to leave his unique musical imprint with 1988’s Chase the Kangaroo. He then took two albums off but came back with 1993’s Kissers and Killers, and has been with the band since then. His last recording occurred earlier in 2018 on The Choir’s album, Bloodshot.
Chandler joined Daniel Amos, a foundational Christian rock band, in 1983. His first album with them was Doppelganger, a masterpiece of jagged ‘80s new wave that showcased his signature aggressive and melodic bass playing. He remained with DA ever since, playing on numerous albums.
Tim also played with many other acclaimed artists, both in the studio and on tour, such as Phil Keaggy, Randy Stonehill, Chuck Girard, Tom Howard, Tonio K., and Pierce Pettis.
