Skalleluia Too! is the fourth full-length album by the American skacore band The Insyderz, released on KMG Records in October 1999, distributed by Provident Music Distribution. It is the second of their albums dedicated to ska renditions of worship songs, The Insyderz Present… Skalleluia! being their first effort.
Despite a critical lambasting, The Insyderz’ first ‘Skalleluia!‘ disc spent six months in the Top 10 of album charts and netted the group a Dove Award. ‘Skalleluia Too!’ serves up 11 praise songs, one hymn and two originals for what is, in many ways, an album superior to its predecessor.
‘Too’ offers a broader musical selection than the first disc with swing, punk, New Orleans jazz, R&B and horn-drenched pop all in evidence. For the most part, The Insyderz don’t toss out an unusual or provocative arrangement strictly for its shock value. «I Could Sing of Your Love Forever», a signature song by Delirious that has been co-opted by Sonicflood, receives a crisp arrangement reminiscent of a Chicago or Blood, Sweat and Tears classic.
Other successful offerings include «Shout to the Lord», built on a sampled drum loop and electric piano intro that recalls Led Zeppelin; the original song «Psalm 139», an old-school soul shouter built on the most traditional ska arrangement on the album; and «Steadfast Love», with a swing chart that borrows a little too liberally from the “Tonight Show” theme.
However, not every interpretation fares well on the project. To these ears, Rich Mullin’s «Step by Step» sounds as awkward in a ska arrangement as did «Awesome God». And the jazz spin and Elvis vocal inflection on «Old Rugged Cross» were probably not great choices either. Still the markedly improved lead vocals of Joe Yerke and the inventive horn charts make this disc a winner. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, January 2000]
