Spiritual Love is the sophomore album by the American contemporary R&B/urban gospel trio Trin-i-tee 5:7, released on B-Rite Music in 1999, a division of Gospo Centric Records, manufactured and distributed in the US by Universal Music & Video Distribution. The album was produced by Armando Colon (tracks: 1 – 3, 12, 14 – 16) and Fred Jerkins III (tracks: 2, 3, 10, 11, 13), as well as Robert Smith (track 5), Joe “Flip” Wilson (tracks 6 and 9), Gerald Isaac (track 7), and R. Kelly (track 8).
It helps to have friends in high places, as the ladies in Trinitee 5:7 can certainly attest. R. Kelly produced the trio’s first single, Kirk Franklin made the group “Nu Nation” tour mainstays, and Trinitee was even featured on ‘The Prince of Egypt – Inspirational’ soundtrack. But even after all that attention – and selling close to 400,000 copies of its debut disc – Trinitee 5:7 faced a daunting challenge on this, its sophomore effort: replacing the departed Terri Brown, who left the trio to be a full-time mom. Help came from none other than the group’s makeup artist, Adrian Anderson, who in her new vocal role blends seamlessly into the fold on Spiritual Love.
While this disc at times begs for more adrenaline and edge, catchy songs, snappy vocal arrangements and eclectic musical flourishes make Spiritual Love enjoyable listening. «Put Your Hands» plays cleverly on two radio classics («Put Your Hand in the Hand» and «Back in Love Again»); the result is a sassy, effervescent testimony brought to a froth by funky guitars and percussive horn jabs.
On the softer side, «The Day You Came» features pleading lead vocals trading off with creamy harmonies, draped against a spare backdrop of organ, electric piano, drum machine and five-string bass. Also engaging is the cover of Michael Jackson’s «I Just Can’t Stop Loving You», which takes The Gloved One’s hit in a direction that’s part smoky soul, part gospel pop. Musically consistent and lyrically direct, Spiritual Love should continue Trinitee’s climb toward the urban gospel firmament. [Lou Carlozo, CCM, December 1999]
