Description

Let it Happen is a B-sides and rarities compilation album by the American punk rock band MxPx, released on Tooth & Nail Records in November 1998.

Fans of MxPx demand only one thing: More! More! More! And the band is happy to comply. Since the debut of its joyously rebellious debut, Pokinatcha, MxPx has cranked out a steady stream of 7″ singles, EPs, live projects, full-length CDs and demos that never made it onto vinyl (or whatever they make compact discs out of).

With Let It Happen the band’s former label releases a 32-song retrospective, comprised of previously unreleased material, re-mixed singles and B-sides. The uninitiated will be blasted by the adrenaline rush of warp-speed guitar strumming and at times oddly syncopated drum bashing that figure prominently on «Never Learn», «Sick Boy» and «Easier Said Than Done». Diehard fans will get a kick out of the deliciously unpretentious demo versions of «Chick Magnet», «Life in General» and «Christalena». And rock aficionados everywhere will relish the punk version of the Ritchie Valens («La Bamba») classic, «Oh [sic] Donna».

Lyrically, Let It Happen doesn’t break any new ground. It’s mostly teenage guy-themes set to music: nobody understands me, girls, life is unfair, rock ‘n’ roll is fun. But while there is the typical angst and alienation (“Why am I in love with a girl/ Who treats me oh so badly?” from «Never Learn»), there are also thoughtful dissertations on forgiveness («Sorry So Sorry»), the existence of God («Creation») and personal responsibility («Circumstance»).

Hard-core fans will want Let It Happen for the previously unreleased material. New fans from the current Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo era, will want to check it out as a historical reference anthology for one of the fastest-rising punk bands to crack the general market.
