Goes Around Comes Around is an album by the British alternative rock band Fono, released in the US on Reunion Records in 1998, manufactured and distributed in the US by Provident Music Distribution and by Word Music in the UK. Remixed and re-released by KMG Records in 1999 (featuring a slightly different tracklist), manufactured and distributed in the US by KMG Records. Also released by Big Deal in co-operation with KMG Records. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Adi Winman.
If you’ve been reading past CRs you’ll know they were previously called Seven and their second gig was at a Bon Jovi concert before 50,000! Now with a new name and a US record company contract the Milton Keynes rockers have come up with the best alternative rock album I have ever heard. Every track is deep, rich and melodic. From surges of adrenaline-charged overdrive, to ponderous acoustic guitars; dance-drum loops and solid pounding skins, ‘Goes Around Comes Around’ has an extremely tight, clear and intelligent production (Adi Winman), with clever technical touches – is it just me, or does the man speaking on «Alcatraz» sound just like Robert D’Nero? «Collide» (you can hear this track on CR cassette issue 47, first track) burst from my Wharfedales and woke me from my apathy: I never usually get into albums on their first few plays. Then came «Under My Skin», «Something Must be Happening», «Pretty You» and «Strangest Thing». WOW!!! «Alcatraz», «Now She’s 24» and «Burn» blew me away. I have been listening to this GREAT album every day for a week and show no signs of tiring of it. Tony Cummings and I were discussing the alternative Christian rock scene a few months ago and were both in agreement that the best stuff seemed to be coming from the States. Not anymore! Take it from me, the Brits are back on the case! An absolute masterpiece! [Andrew Privett, Cross Rhythms, December 1998]
Solomon said it best: “There is nothing new under the sun.” And British modern pop-rock trio Fono is a case in point. Its North American debut project, goesaroundcomesaround, is a canny combination of driving, punchy rock guitars, juxtaposed against melancholy, acoustic melodies which creates a moody, at times almost manic, atmosphere – not bad, just not particularly original. The Who, Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer all did it 25 years ago. And King’s X and Fold Zandura do it today.
Still, goesaroundcomesaround has a lot going for it. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Del Currie has an honest, intriguing voice and handles his guitarist chores with craftsman-like precision. Drummer Andy Ridley and bassist Ian Crawford lay down a solid, rhythmic foundation without ever overwhelming the melodies.
Lyrically, Currie is alternately obscure and obvious. “She tracks back high in a gasoline dream/ And the girl never knows just what she means/ Inside, outside/ Pretty you” (from «Pretty You»). Huh? “Now she’s 24/ And ready to begin/ To let her past be past/ And start to live” (from «Now She’s 24»). Okay, I understand that.
There may not be enough overt God-talk to satisfy Christian music purists. For those stuck in the Dark Ages and keeping score, Fono only says “Jesus” once in the entire album, and less than a third of the songs make any direct reference to God. But there are plenty of oblique references that will at least allow the listener to decide how the art will affect them.
Goesaroundcomesaround is a solid modern rock project that improves – and lyrically expands – with subsequent listens. [Mike Parker, CCM, October 1999]
