Description
In Scarlet Storm is the sophomore solo album by the American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer David Zaffiro of Bloodgood fame, released on Intense Records in 1990, an imprint of Frontline Music Group, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was produced by David Zaffiro and Maverick Gibson.
David Zaffiro’s second solo album builds upon the top-notch foundation he laid with ‘The Other Side’, which creatively revealed the intelligence and musical dexterity of this professional songwriter and performer. Melding sound and word, Zaffiro’s subtle touch produces songs that speak both musically and lyrically.
Often using his vocals as an instrument to emphasize the message, Zaffiro drops a note as he finishes the phrase, “I’m at the end of my rope,” in «Holding Fast». Like its predecessor, this album flows smoothly from one song to another, yet this one is a little more rockin’ throughout. The progressive mixture of quality commercial pop rock with heavy guitar rhythms is done with lots of taste, neither compromising performance nor zeal. Both the fans of hard rockin’ Holy Soldier and the “adult rock” of Genesis/Phil Collins should enjoy this project.
Lyrically the album focuses on the personal storms Zaffiro has faced in the last year. Relating how God uses the storms of this life to reveal and purge the impurities from our lives, the title track uses the story of Jesus walking on the water to illustrate this: “…The crashing waves are like the falling of your faith/ I’ll take your hand, and there is peace.”
The only weal point on the album are the generic drum sounds, which, although credited to a player, feel more like a drum machine; and the syrup ballad «Give This Life to You», which closes the album with a strong lyrical resolution, yet changes the musical mood so drastically that it departs from the rest of the album. Overall, ‘In Scarlet Storm’ proves that this man is not some ignorante neanderthal metalhead guitarist, but a trained and creative artist. While his contributions to Bloodgood were great, hearing this music makes one glad that he’s had the chance to release two solo albums without the confines of one band’s identity.
