The Other Side

Description

The Other Side is the solo debut album by the American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer David Zaffiro of Bloodgood fame, released on Alarma Records in 1989, an alternative imprint of Frontline Music Group, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was produced by David Zaffiro with Maverick Gibson co-producing.

Okay, so this is the David Zaffiro who played those monstrous guitar parts in one of Christian metal’s biggest bands – Bloodgood. And this is his solo debut. So why isn’t Doug Van Pelt reviewing this one? I mean, it’s just another metal album, right? Wrong. Well, at least not exactly.

That is to say, if you’re expecting the kind of hard core metal from Bloodgood’s ‘Detonation‘, then ‘The Other Side’ is going to surprise you with its big, arena rock sound and more than a share of just plain old pop. All of this does not bode badly for Zaffiro, who proves he has a fine voice of his own and who rocks here in his own way.

‘The Other Side’ will get its share of rock airplay with «Stay» and «I See Red», but I can just hear those Bloodgood fans who thought the band sold out on ‘Rock in a Hard Place‘, when they hear the keyboard intro to «Why Me» and the big bed of background vocals that fill out the tracks where Zaffiro’s guitars used to be.

This is a nice offering of tasty, pop rock, with enough hot playing to satisfy some of Zaffiro’s fans, and more than enough to offer to a whole new audience of Petra and Idle Cure fans. [Brian Q. Newcomb, CCM, August 1989]
