This I Know

Description

This I Know is the fourth album by the American pop singer Kim Boyce, released on Myrrh Records in 1990, a division of Word. Also distributed by A&M Records. The album was recorded at Knightlight Studios in Dallas, Texas; with Tim Miner producing.

Call this an expansion production. Sure, the foundations and structure were built during earlier projects but no matter how much a vision a performer has, sometimes they need to let someone else take them to the next level.

Kim Boyce and her contemporaries have been fighting for legitimate acceptance of this brand of music – performance dance/pop. While her critics scoffed at the supposed cotton-candy fluff of the music, her listeners have strongly embraced this feel-good, infectious sound. Boyce’s beat-driven dance music is more concerned with beat than ballad, groove than issues – it’s the nature of the music and probably its criticism. There’s not much thought required – though sometimes that’s not really a bad thing. You shouldn’t have to wrestle with every song like it was a Larry Crabb book. However some of Boyce’s past songs tended to trivialize important issues («He’s Not For Me»).

Producer Tim Miner has minimized many of Boyce’s past problems be ensembling writers and musicians that create songs and sounds that take in mind those structures built earlier. In the writer’s seat much of time, Miner writes for this audience, never allowing the project or production to overwhelm. In creating Boyce’s best album to date, the sound is tightly produced, and filled with choral sounding vocals and unexpected grooves, working well to combat Boyce’s sometimes thin vocals.

And you can dance to this album. «Good Enough» has a reprise dance mix and «Time Marches On» – one of the strongest cuts on the album – mixes rhythm and vocals with a determined groove. «True Love», a duet with husband Gary Koreiba to be released by A&M to the secular market, is a pretty ditty, but light fare. (Should fit right in there with those top-40 markets where sappy love ballads abound.)

Often overlooked and most praiseworthy is Boyce’s continued commitment to he presentation of a Christian lifestyle to her younger audience. In songs like «Right for Me» (penned by Amy Grant and Tom Hemby) and «Longing for Someone», there is more concern and less cheerleading than in times past – no doubt thanks once again to noteworthy songwriting skills.

Here is an artist who is catching up with her image and the results are encouraging. She’s got some tough competition in the minds of today’s youth. Although not quite ready to be dancing the night away with Paula Abdul, Boyce is beginning to offer a formidable alternative. Dance/pop may not be your thing but the sound is contagious and is a reminder of the joy found in the Kingdom – carefree, danceable joy. [Kathleen A Ervin, CCM, January 1991]
