According to John – A2J

Description

A2J is the sophomore studio album by the American alternative pop band According to John, released on KMG Records in 1998. The album was produced by Billy Smiley of White Heart fame.

Already featured on the ‘Mindy’s Revenge‘ compilation and with an indie CD under their belts, According To John’s new release indicates that this is a band who have made huge strides forward. It isn’t simply in their songwriting but with a bigger budget to play with, the production values give the band an edgier sound. Firmly focussed on God, this is one band unafraid to deal with some difficult topics and also unafraid to write songs that minister. So what more could you want? You get great music, top tunes, tight harmonies and the kind of catchy hooky songs that you’ll be whistling in the shower before the end of the week! «Remedy» looks at the sinfulness of the human heart and our need for the “Great Physician”. «Store» is a pounding pop tune which highlights the need for us to have our eyes fixed on things that have eternal value. «Blue Sedans» is packed with vibes and I’m suddenly trying to work out how to describe their music. It’s only when I get to «Justified» which has some great REM-style mandolin that I nail it! To give you an indication of a musical ballpark, ‘A2J’ is like crossing REM with Jars Of Clay. There are so many good songs here that I can’t wait to catch them playing at the Cross Rhythms festival – this is one band you need to check out. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, April 1999]
