Description
The Super Terrific Happy Hour is the fourth and final album by the Canadian pop/rock band One Hundred Days (fronted by Ian Tanner and Andrew Horrocks of The Awakening fame), independently released in Canada on Uzzz Records in 1998. Re-issued in the US on Audio-X in 2000 (in slightly modified form and featuring new cover artwork). The album was recorded and mixed February-July 1998 by band member Andrew Horrocks at A.M.E. Recording Studio in Kitchener/Ontario, Canada; with the band producing. All songs written by Horrocks and Tanner.
Featuring Ian Tanner on lead and background vocals, keyboards, bass, and additional guitar; Andrew Horrocks on lead and background vocals, as well as guitars; Tony Lind on acoustic and electric guitars and vocals; and Darryl McWaters on drums, percussion, loops, and additional vocals.
One Hundred Days was a band started by Andrew Horrocks and Ian Tanner circa 1990-91. Over the decade of the 90’s, the band changed members a few times. By 1997, we were officially an indie band, and with new members and new life, we began recording an album on our own terms. In 1998 we finished and released the album independently. The band officially called it quits in early 2000. Later that year, a US label re-released the album in slightly modified form.
Every so often an album comes along which makes the job of Cross Rhythms reviewer a complete and utter pleasure. This is an example of such an album. OHD, as they like to be known, make class pop/rock in a style somewhere between the still lamented Pray For Rain and All Star United, with just a hint now and then of ’60s influences such as the Beatles. Wherever your CD player’s random function falls, you’re sure of a warm welcome, whether it be the rock crunch of «You», the summer groove of «Always A Reason», the jangly acoustic hop of «Take It Slow» or the psychedelic-tinged «Purple Shades». Watch out particularly for the spoof stage announcement and screaming fans that herald «Like No Other», the hilarious yet serious «It’s Carpet Time» which observes the phenomenon of being slain in the spirit thus, “They’re all falling down/ If I want to get to heaven I’d better pass out.” Make sure too that you check out the hidden track, containing already the best guitar solo and vocal performance of the year. Quite brilliant. This Canadian band should definitely be investigated. [Steve Best, Cross Rhythms, February 2001]
