Description
Time is the third album by the American rock band Third Day, released on Essential Records in August 1999, a division of Brentwood Music, manufactured and distributed in the US by Provident Music Distribution. Also distributed by BMG Distribution. The album was recorded by Jim Dineen at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia; and at The Boardroom in Nashville, Tennessee; with Monroe Jones producing (with tracks 1 and 6 co-produced by Dineen). Mixed by Shane Wilson at Whistler’s Music, Sound Stage Studios, and Recording Arts in Nashville.
This is the band’s most mature – yet loosest – effort to date. First off, it sounds like a live record. Credit goes to producer Monroe Jones, who had Third Day set up its amps in a circle at the world-renowned Southern Tracks studios in Atlanta and just let ’em rip. More importantly, Time marks the band’s furthest distance from the snares of Hootie & the Blowfish-land by expertly employing tasty sonic elements such as female gospel choirs and horn sections throughout – the kind of smart instrumentation that puts Third Day in the new Black Crowes camp, rather than staring at a ‘Cracked Rear View’.
It’s also refreshing to hear a slower, contemplative song kick things off. The spacious, almost atmospheric «I’ve Always Loved You» showcases Mac Powell’s full-throated baritone accompanied by a cool lap-steel and acoustic guitar. It’s quite the teaser for the volume change that is to come.
«Believe» and «Took My Place» simply rock. Of Christians who struggle with faith, the former asks, “Tell me how much evidence do you need?” The latter is perhaps the most kickin’ track on Time, dominated by the aforementioned female gospel choir and horn section, as well as cool percussion and guitars.
An un-Third Day-ish, phase-shifted guitar intros «Never Bow Down», another rocker dedicated to a no-compromise faith stance – and to persecuted believers around the world. Keyboard swells and electronic drums color the beginnings of «Your Love Oh Lord», a praise-song takeoff that’s destined to be one of those mid-concert staples, with folks swaying back and forth in the aisles.
Time runs out with «Give». With its marching-drum vibe, gradual fade-out and powerful closing rave up, «Give» is Third Day’s impressive answer to U2’s «40» – and a poignant example of a young band that’s busting out of its toddler duds and stretching out into finer, wilder threads. Keep an eye out for ’em on the catwalk. [Dave Urbanski, CCM, August 1999]
