LaRue

Description

The self-titled, full-length debut album by the American pop duo LaRue (siblings Phillip and Natalie LaRue) was released on Reunion Records in August 1999, manufactured and distributed by Provident Music Distribution. The album was produced by Ken Mary for Sonic Fish Productions, Rick Elias for Liongate Productions, and Michael Linney for Millinneyum Entertainment and Quinland. All songs written by Phillip and Natalie LaRue.

The self-titled debut from the brother/sister LaRue team is a mix of shimmering professional pop sounds and fresh-faced innocence. Phillip and Natalie have mature voices, and together they have written songs that belie their youthfulness. Aided by a crew of top-flight producers (Rick Elias, Ken Mary and Michael Linney), LaRue builds on acoustic guitar-based folk/pop songs and shared lead vocals to create a polished collection that speaks to and from the concerns of Christian youth. The result is a friendly pop record that listeners who are into contemporary adult sounds will find appealing as well.

«Someday» rings with a kind of romantic innocence, as Natalie sings a wistful love song to an unknown future mate; her rich voice and wide range come to the fore as she sings of her confidence that she will be joined with someone whose faith in God will be strong. On two more of the strongest offerings, «Reason» and «Picture Frame», Phillip trades off the lead vocals, proving himself equally adept, and the two harmonize with an effortless sibling similarity. Both songs deal with questions that teens often have about life and the assurance that God is there to provide answers.

«Waiting Room» is a shining, sophisticated pop song which appeared first on last summer’s introductory LaRue EP. It suggests the right kind of direction and promise to be found in this duo. [Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM, October 1999]
