Hot Rod Deluxe

Description

Hot Rod Deluxe is the sophomore and final album by the American alternative rock band Ruby Joe, released on Sublime Records in 1999, a division of Brentwood Music, manufactured and distributed in the US by Provident Music Distribution. The album was recorded by Matt Wignall, assisted by Mark Casselman, at Orange Whip Recording in Santa Barbara, California; with Billy Zoom producing. Mixed by Billy Zoom with Mark Neill at Soil Of The South Studios in San Diego and with Gene Eugene of Adam Again at Front Page Recorders in Glendale, California.

With Billboard recently running a cover story on the “Global Rockabilly Revival” here are Christendom’s own set of Brylcream-quiffed rockabillies clearly owning a good collection of Sun Records originals and with a desire to use the frantic tempos and hiccupping vocals of the ’50s country-meets-rock’n’roll synthesis in the service of the Gospel. Take «John 17» here, using a tune ripped straight from Big Boy Crudup’s «That’s Alright Mama» which Elvis immortalised. Ruby Joe turn it into a careering retro whooping which will have you jiving as the lyrics bite home (“He shook the hand of sinners/ Had dinner with some friends/ Religious folk hated/ All that he did intend”). Much more focussed than the punk-meets-rockabilly of the band’s ‘Sinking The Eight Ball‘ this is a whooping, bass slapping, hand jiving delight. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, June 1999]
