The Promise: A Celebration of Christ’s Birth

Description

The Promise, sub-titled A Celebration of Christ’s Birth, is a Christmas album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Card, released on Sparrow Records in ‎1991. The album was recorded and mixed by Ronnie Brookshire with Phil Naish producing. Background vocals arranged and conducted by J.A.C. Redford.

This exquisite album of all original compositions finds Bible scholar Card examining the scriptures surrounding the coming of the Savior, and paraphrasing those stories in song. Card’s musical style remains folk-based, with the frequent use of instruments such as dulcimer and harp adding a more ethnic/exotic flavor to some cuts. The orchestrations by J.A.C. Redford (‘The Trip to Bountiful’ soundtrack) occasionally add richer textures to Michael’s simple re-telling of the Christmas story. For those who wish to delve into the stories behind the songs or are just looking for a unique gift item, there’s a companion book with all the songs’ lyrics and the artist’s personal comments, available only in a special gift box. The music is available separately, and is a welcome addition to anyone’s holiday music library. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, November 1991]
