An Acapella Christmas

Description

An Acapella Christmas is a Christmas album by the American vocal group Glad, released on Benson Music Group in 1991. The album was produced by group members Ed Nalle and Rob Neal.

This is Glad’s third a cappella project, and it’s every bit as energetic and impressive as it first two. Glad has always seemed a bit mannered to me; sort of “Harvard Glee Club” of a cappella groups. But on this holiday outing, I found little of the “starchiness” I expected. Even the arrangements based more in the classic/choral tradition breathe with more heartfelt emotion. Occasionally, their voices create a harmonic blend which owes more to pop groups like The Beach Boys and The Association than any church or classical traditions. Glad interprets part of «Silent Night» in German, and tackles contemporary material such as «Starlight», as well as applying a fresh treatment to standards such as «Joy to the World» and Handel’s «For Unto Us».
