Description
Fire of Forgiveness is the sixth album by the American singer and songwriter Kenny Marks, released on Dayspring Records in 1992, a division of Word. Manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was recorded by Brent King at Treasure Isle Recorders in Nashville, Tennessee; with Kenny Marks and Bubba Smith producing. Mixed by Marc DeSisto at Mastermix in Nashville.
Half of the tracks on the album were co-written by Kenny Marks and Phil Madeira. Kenny Marks is backed by a session band featuring Mike Lawler and Phil Kristianson on acoustic piano, Hammond B-3 organ, and synthesizer, Dave Perkins and Kenny Greenberg on guitars, and a rhythm section consisting of bassist Tommy Sims and drummer Paul Leim, with Eric Darken on percussion. Backing vocals provided by Donna McElroy, Kim Fleming, Vicki Hampton, and Bob Carlisle. “Like A Father To Me” is a duet with Kim Hill.
Kenny Marks has just finished his first decade of recording and touring, and has amessed some impressive credits during that time. The secret to his success has been an unflinching willingness to take his personal stories and place them in a universal context to which a wider audience can relate.
‘Fire of Forgiveness’ is dedicated to Mark’s father; he and the rest of Kenny’s family are the subjects of the album’s best material. «I Need a Savior» is a slow, booming ballad, which documents the times of doubt which have plagued Marks in recent years; «Someone to Come Home to» and «Promises to Keep» are back-to-back love songs, tracking a marital relationship put to the test, while «1932» and «Like a Father Should Be» tell Mark’s family history. The former song speaks of Kenny’s father’s immigration to the U.S., while the latter tune, a moving duet with Kim Hill, finds Marks both thankful for the example set by his dad, and hopeful that he can provide as solid an upbringing for his own child.
In between the album’s more brooding moments, roots rocker Marks pumps up the volume. The title track tells of the chastising and purifying nature of God’s love; «Turn My World Around» is a sparkling rocker that reminds us that we’re each responsible for the little piece of earth we can influence. The album closes with the barnstorming «Forever Love», another reminder of the bonds between man and wife. Evidently, the past couple of years have brought Marks more than his share of sorrows as well as joys; and this artist has done a wonderful job in balancing his look at both sides of the coin in this fine album.
