Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to one of the hottest and baddest rap albums that I’ve come across in a long time. In the immortal words of Delbert Wilkins, ‘Plantin-A-Seed’ by D-Boy is TOTALLY CRUCIAL! I kid you not – this album has grooves powerful enough to wake up a dead stick and enter it for a dance competition, and lyrics that make you smile, throw your fist in the air and shout ‘hallelujah’ and inspire you all at the same time, delivered in a style faster than a Roadrunner with four legs – this is definitely not an album for Amy Grant fans. It is, however, an album that is equally at home on a personal stereo (liven up those boring bus journey) or played flat out in a club. I first listened to this in the car and received some very strange looks from fellow motorists as I ventured to do the «King David» – a rap about dancing in celebration of God – whilst commuting to work. Other gems in a collection of “def” tracks include the hilarious «Church Hoppers», the positively animal savagery of «G.O.D’S Posse In Effect», and «Stompin Satan» and the balance of silky smooth vocals and hard dynamite rap on «Plantin-A-Seed». Fans of L.L. Cool J should check out «Pick Yourself Up», for a taste of rap’s gentler side, while Tim Miner‘s so-soulful vocal is truly righteous. In an age when rap music’s lyrics revolve predominantly around the amazing attributes of the rapper himself, it’s great to see Christian rap boasting about Jesus – and D-Boy is one of the best boasters.
