Somewhere in the World

Description

Somewhere in the World is the sophomore album by the American pop/rock band Illustrator, released on Ocean Records in 1989, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was produced and engineered by Win Kutz.

This is lyrical, polished, melodic, pop/rock at its best. Illustrator’s sophomore effort on the Ocean label branches out in some new directions musically, but continues with the full harmonies, clear vocals, and strong electronic instrumentation of the first album. The harmonies are plentiful and varied, with all of the five members contributing to what sounds like a thick wall of sound. The band that hails from Washington state included one cover tune on the album, the Little River Band’s «Help Is On It’s Way», along with heavy songwriting contribution from drummer, Kirk Allen. Probably the best song on the 10-song project is «I Surrender». Both lyrically and musically, this track is the most interesting, aggressive, and original.

The overall sound of ‘Somewhere in the World’ made me think of vintage Petra (late ’70s) because of its vocal clarity and clean production. This, though, is where the similarities end. Heavy use of sequencers, synth patches, MIDI technology, electronic drums, and a good mix, make this project totally radio-ready and up to date. The one element that would make this album even better would be a little grittier, more street-wise production. [Stephanie Bennett, CCM, January 1990]
