Description
Through the Forest is the fifth album by the American alternative rock band Mad at the World, released on Frontline Records in 1992, a division of the Frontline Music Group, distributed by FMG Distribution. The album was recorded and mixed at MATW Studios with band member Roger Rose producing. Drum tracks recorded at Rose Studios.
Mad at the World is Roger Rose on vocals and guitar, Brent Gordon on lead and rhythm guitar, Mike Pendelton on bass and vocals, and Randy Rose on drums and vocals. (Ray Rose played bass on tracks 2, 7, and 10.)
After several transitional efforts, moving Mad at the World from the Euro-techno-pop sound of its self-titled debut to the post-modern guitar rock of last year’s ‘Boomerang‘, the Rose brothers have settled into a musical holding pattern between metal and grittier hard rock values. Settling into a sound has its benefits in that ‘Through the Forest’ provides some of the band’s strongest material, and best instrumental playing from drummer Randy Rose, lead guitarist Brent Gordon and the most assured vocal performance yet from Roger Rose.
Exhibiting some Doors and other hard rock influences, MATW has come more or less into its own niche. «Always Be My Love» celebrates the marital love relationship, while «That Lonesome Road», «Lost in the Forest» and «Alone» describe life cut off from God, and right relationships within God’s grace. «I’ve Got a Heaven» is likely to be the band’s first big push toward adult contemporary listeners, but mostly the Roses accentuate their established strengths in the guitar/rock mold. «Mad at the World» gets reworked in the newer band context, but mostly ‘Through the Forest’ exhibits a fresh and invigorated band approach, more confident than on past outings.
