Songs for Liturgical Worship

Description

Songs for Liturgical Worship is the debut album by the American garage rock group The Holy Ghost Reception Committee: #9, released on Paulist Press in 1968. The album was recorded by Richard Alderson at Impact Sound Studio in New York City, with production and musical supervision by Elmer Jared Gordon.

Hey, with a moniker like that you know these guys are gonna be a bit off the beaten path. And these Catholic high schoolers don’t disappoint in delivering two of Jesus music’s premier garage rock albums which not only worship the Lord, but also touch on issues like civil rights, urban violence, Vietnam, and poverty. The lineup is Mark Puleo (lead guitar), Larry Johnsen (bass, organ), Bob Kearney (guitar) and Dennis Blair (bass), all students at Regis High School in New York City. Guest Norman Grossman provides the drums. The layered electric guitars make for a folky psychedelic ‘60s vibe reminiscent of The Byrds. The album is well-produced, but retains a certain amateurness and basement feel that’s more of a boon than a detraction. Their debut seems more rooted in the ‘60s sound than the follow-up, with even some UK beat influences and cheesy organ sprinkled about. «He’s A Christian» is a high point, rocking with raw electric guitars horrendously out of tune (on purpose I hope!). Similar energy levels can be found on «The Resurrection» and «The Magic Ice Cube», the latter with intriguing lyrics like “as you step into the sunlight, please remember that it’s non-existent, self-subsistent”. «Step Into The Wind» effectively targets jangly Byrds folk-rock, while «There’s A Voice Inside» works in cool spaced-out echo effects on the vocals. Even the slower selections like «Day After Day», «That Day» and «Hymn For A Sad Lady» are aglow with the trippy garage vibes. Twelve original songs in all, and not a bad one in the bunch. Includes lyric sleeve with guitar chords. Subtitled Songs For Liturgical Worship. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
