Description
The Dream, b/w “Love Is the Answer”, is a two-sided 7-inch vinyl single by the American rock band Gidians Bible, released on Golden Voice Music in 1969. The single was recorded by Terry Jamison at Golden Voice Studios in South Pekin, Illinois; with Gaylen Cumberland producing. The band actually recorded four songs – “Lowland Blues”, “Body Trip”, “The Dream”, “Love is the Only Answer” – but only one single was cut, featuring the latter two tracks. The garage folk psych track “The Dream” charted locally (in a WNAP radio survey from 4/4/1970, “The Dream” came in at No. 18).
Gidians Bible was a band from Bloomington in Illinois formed in 1968, though moving to Indianapolis in 1970. The band that recorded the single consisted of Greg X. Volz (lead vocal, a younger brother of Ron Volz of the legendary central Illinois rock & roll combo The Rockin’ R’s), Terry Stevenson (guitar), Dave Campbell (organ), Doug Floyd (bass), and Dave Eden (drums). Back in the day the band opened for artists like Janis Joplin, Uriah Heap, and Chicago, and played Indy lounges, The Green Onion, The Holly Oak, as well as the Kickapoo Creek Fest, IL 70.
Because the Gideon’s Bible asked them to change their name the band renamed themselves E (E Band) around 1971. At this point only Greg X. Volz and Dave Eden remained of the original band, and new members were Joe Grier (guitars, vocal harmony), David O’Haver (organ, vocal harmony) and Tom Byler (bass, vocal harmony). (Greg and Tom were former bandmates from the mid-’60s four-piece band The Wombats, the very first group to record at the not-quite-finished Golden Voice Recording Studio.) As E they only recorded a couple of studio cuts, on a musical called Because I Am, originally released as a double LP on Clear Light Productions in 1973. The band’s lead singer Greg X. Volz later became lead singer for Petra. As well, the songs of Dave Eden (David John Eden) later have been covered by various artists; most notable “The Coloring Song” recorded by Petra on their 1981-album Never Say Die (a song originally written for, and played by, the E band) and “Road to Zion” recorded on Petra’s follow-up album More Power to Ya released in 1982. (After E Band disbanded, Joe Grier and David Eden teamed up in The Joyful Noise, who recorded “The Coloring Song” on their 1976-album, No Room in the Middle.)
