Drivin’ Wheels

Description

Drivin’ Wheels is the sophomore and final album by the American singer and songwriter Ed Raetzloff‎, released on NewPax ‎Records in 1981. The album was recorded by Gene Eichelberger assisted by Bill Quinn at Doppler Studios in Atlanta, Georgia; with Turley Richards producing and arranging. Mixed by Eichelberger assisted by Bob Clark at Great Circle Sound in Nashville, Tennessee.

Vocalist Ed Raetzloff is backed by the Atlanta-based rock band Whiteface – Doug Bare on keyboards, Steve Hardwick on rhythm and lead guitar, Barry Dunaway on bass (who had replaced Whiteface’s original bassist, Kyle Henderson when he left the band to join The Producers after Whiteface’s debut album failed to sell), and Benny Rappa on drums – as well as Randy Scruggs and Jon Goin on additional lead guitar. Harmony vocals by Turley Richards.

Ed Raetzloffs ‘Drivin’ Wheels’ (NewPax, NP 3313) is one of the few white, gospel/rock LPs now spinning that keeps it simple, and gutsy. Holding to the “He changed my life; I’m a-walkin’ (or, in this case, a-drivin’) down this road” theme, Raetzloff is still demonstrating his straightforward, southern rock style sans strings, horns, or other production embellishments. The electricity in his rock has toned down considerably since his last (and first) LP. (Is his audience getting old, or is his Christian record company carrying more weight?) But, surprisingly, the results are more listenable, if less courageous.

Produced by Turley Richards (who carries with him a list of secular music credits), ‘Drivin’ Wheels’ seems stylistically consistent throughout. Raetzloff wrote only three of the songs on this LP, compared to all songs on his first. Two on this one were also written by Richards. Several tunes stand out from the rest: the oldie, «People Get Ready»; «Holy, Holy»; Tim Sheppard’s «Hey There Stranger»; and «You’ll Have It All». [Karen Marie Platt, CCM, May 1982]
