Mansfield & Co. is an album by the American singer and songwriter Darrell Mansfield, released on Ocean Records in 1995, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was recorded by Abe Senna, Eric Smith, David Mansfield, Jonathan Mansfield, Mark Uehlein, and Tim Lauber at Ocean Studios in Burbank and Mama Jo’s Recording Studio in North Hollywood, California; with Darrell Mansfield producing. Mixed by Tim Lauber at Mama Jo’s.
Featuring Darrell Mansfield on lead vocals and harmonica, backed by Rob Rinderer on piano, Steve Wood on Hammond B3 organ, Craig Erickson on guitar (with Eric Turner sitting in on tracks 3, 5, and 10), Greg Chaisson on bass, and Burleigh Drummond on percussion, with Jaymes Felix providing background vocals.
Just about everyone knows Darrell Mansfield, and, you guessed, he’s still turning out great records after all these years. In fact, he can’t be far off a dozen albums and I bet they all sound pretty similar – apart from the classic ‘Slowburn‘ with CR’s Glenn Kaiser. With ‘Mansfield And Co’ it’s the tried and tested formula – rock-solid bass and drums backing some decidedly excellent guitar work (courtesy of Craig Erickson) and Mansfield’s famous harmonica and powerful, gutsy voice. Personal highlights were «Heavy Load» (top drawer Mansfield) and a storming rendition of «Let’s Work Together» which I defy you not to sing along with. Never likely to be a legendary album but unmissable for Mansfield fans – and as good a place as any to start for those wanting to discover the bluesy evangelist for the first time.
