Faded Blues

Description

Faded Blues is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter David Mullen, released on Warner Bros. Records in 1991. The album was recorded at Digital Recorders and Masterfonics in Nashville, Tennessee; with Justin Niebank producing.

As paleface attempts at the blues go, this here’s a decent enough slab of red-blooded material. Not as gritty as Darrell Mansfield/Glenn Kaiser‘s territory, or as smooth as the Q Stone variety, but occupying the blues/rock area frequented by such as Paul Janes’ The Blues Band. The chink in the armour might be that the musicians selected to participate, fine rock musicians though they are, don’t emanate the blues as do those whose main field of music this is. Compare, for example, with something from the above-mentioned Blues Band and you’ll notice a certain raw, gut-level validity missing from some sounds here which make this hover dangerously near the dodgy “good attempt” borderline. However, Mullen’s loaded with drive and class, so good marks are in order. Anyway, the blues are good for you. Anyone not rushing out to buy this is a big sissy!
