All Power

Description

All Power is an album by the American gospel and soul singer Laura Lee with Eternal Light, released on Circle City Records in 1984, marketed and distributed by Becket Records. The album was produced by Al Hobbs.

Laura Lee, along with Della Reese, was a member of the pioneering Meditation Singers, has appeared in movies like ‘Detroit 9000’, co-starred with Al Green on ‘Higher Plane’, and recorded a number of r&b hits, including «I Need It». She’s also a killer gospel singer, a more subtle, more commercial Mavis Staples.

The best tunes on ‘All Power’, such as «Brand New Me», feature strong, sinewy production and Miss Lee’s smoky, bluesy voice. «Brand New Me» is r&b soul. The band’s just this close to really cutting loose, creating an edge-of-your-seat kind of creative tension. Suddenly, all the musicians kick into double-time as Miss Lee testifies through several electrifying modulations that left my headphones breathless.

«Just One Touch» is slower, more emotional, with heavy Chicago-blues overtones and a unique first-person narrative. «Since I Made Up My Mind» has an impressively complex arrangement, while the closing «How I Love You» shows that she can handle the more subdued, restrained material equally well. There’s even a soulful version of «God Bless America» here, but like you’ve never heard it sung before.

Laura Lee can do it all. Powerfully. [Bob Darden, CCM, February 1985]
