Trust in God is an album by the American soul singer and songwriter Al Green, released by Hi Records in 1984, manufactured and distributed by both A&M Records and Myrrh Records, a division of Word. The album was recorded and mixed by Al Green, Ron Dickerson, and Paul Zaleski at Al Green Music Recording Studio in Memphis, Tennessee; with Zaleski producing for Al Green Music Inc. for Cream/HI Records.
With each gospel release, three-time Grammy award winner Al Green moves closer to the rhythm-and-blues sound which garnered him such early ’70s hits as «Let’s Stay Together». Green’s latest release, ‘Trust in God’, furthers this trend.
Green inlcudes remakes of some pop classics on this release. A touch of Green’s Memphis soul is heard on Joe South’s «Don’t It Make You Wanta Go Home». Frank Wilson’s «Up the Ladder to the Roof» and Ashford & Simpson’s «Ain’t No Mountain High Enough» are also capably handled by Green (although he could have done more with the latter song if he had given it more than two-and-a-half-minutes).
The highlight of the remakes is Green’s treatment of the Bill Withers standard «Lean on Me». The cut opens with the classic gospel sermonette delivered by Green backed by piano, guitar, and cymbals. This technique sets the mood while Green sings with fervor and conviction. The disappointing note here, again, is the brevity of the song (2:09).
Green never fails to include at least one gospel standard on his albums. This time out, Green does his best to touch the soul and the heart with his version of the old hymn «No Not One».
Although most of the songs on the album lack deep lyrical substance and are relative shourt, ‘Trust in God’ shows Al Green at his soulful, gospel best. [Tim A. Smith, CCM, December 1984]
