Wake Low

Description

The self-titled full-length debut album by the American indie pop trio Wake Low was funded through a Kickstarter campaign and independently released on Bad Buffer in November 2020 (though digitally available for backers only on October 23). The album was recorded at Huge Lucky and The Silent Planet in Nashville, Tennessee; with band member Asher Peterson producing. Drum engineering by Brandon Owens. Mixed by Peter Katis (tracks 2, 6, and 11), Craig Alvin (tracks 1, 5, and 9), Joe Hutchinson (tracks 3, 7, and 10), Nathan Johnson (tracks 4 and 8), and Asher Peterson (track 12). All songs co-written by the band.

The sibling trio is comprised of Christian music artist Andrew Peterson’s kids; Aedan (guitars, vocals), Skye (keyboards, guitars, vocals, percussion) and Asher Peterson (drums, keyboards, bass, vocals, guitars, OP1). After working on several different projects separately, the siblings finally found time during the Covid quarantine to work on a project together.

The Peterson siblings (Aedan, Asher, and Skye) are at it again! Their latest project draws its name from the windy front of low atmospheric pressure that follows a storm, and they’ve got a few musical storms of their own to share. On opener «Curtain», they harmonize surprisingly like Bookends-era Simon and Garfunkel, backed by distant horns. «Testify» heads off in a completely different direction, driven by an irresistible bass groove over octaved vocals. Then «Badaboom» goes sparse with saloon piano and an off-kilter drum loop. «Flowers in the Dome» is a brief palate cleanser with a slow-attack synth patch, leading into the delightful, wistful acoustic ballad «How Did We Get Here?» «Autumntide» hits on all cylinders, with tight vocals, and cool sequencing over a wash of synth. Closer «Morning Star», the only purely acoustic selection, generalizes 2 Peter 1:19 into a song of longing. Resurrection themes recur in the lyrics; “don’t close your eyes to the tomb that’s broken wide.” “The curtain’s torn in two.” Aedan sits firmly in the producer’s chair for what will hopefully be the latest of many family collaborations.
