Description
The self-titled, full-length debut album by the American pop duo Say-So (husband and wife Jim & Kim Thomas) was released on Organic Records in 1997, a Pamplin Music label, manufactured and distributed in the US by Pamplin Music. The album was recorded by F. Reid Shippen at October Studio and The Front Room in Nashville, Tennessee; with Rick Will and the band producing. Mixed by Will, assisted by Shippen, at October Studio.
The CD cover tells us that Say-so are Kim Thomas on vocals – plus accordion, acoustic guitar and autoharp (whatever happened to the autoharp after Malcolm and Alwyn?); and Jim Thomas on guitars, keyboards and backing vocals. All songs are self-penned, apart from «Wonderful World», which was co-written with Phil Keaggy in 1994. Track one kicks off with a riff reminiscent of the intro of Delirious?’ «Deeper», but we’re soon into a very different style with accordions, jangling acoustic guitars and Kim Thomas sounding, as she does frequently throughout the album, like Julie Miller, both in vocal quality and in her occasional singing/speaking style. However, despite their Nashville base, the style is definitely more folk than country. Arrangements and production are excellent – as you would expect with a line-up of Nashville heavyweights such as; Phil Madeira, Chris McHugh and Rick Will helping out; plus a special horn section comprising – no kidding – Charlie Peacock on cornet (or “coronet”, according to the sleeve notes) and Steve Taylor on trombone! A well crafted and undemanding album which one could easily give to a not yet Christian friend, or just mellow out to yourself. [Nigel Harris, Cross Rhythms, December 1997]
