To the Kindness of God is a studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Card, released on Covenant Artists in February 2019. It is a collection of songs based on the untranslatable Hebrew word, Hesed. Kindness, however is a popular choice in translating Hesed. This album is to sing and express in words, the kindness of God.
The latest gift from modern Christian music’s resident theologian finds him collaborating with an impressive array of influences for a theme record about that elusive fruit of the Spirit, kindness. Ginny Owens co-writes and sings duet on «Come as You Are» and «I Will Be Kind». Famed Alabama songwriter Pierce Pettis offers «That Kind of Love». «The Shelter of the Shadow», co-written and arranged by master maritime troubadour John Mook, becomes a chorale by the Surrey Singers (of England, not the one from Oklahoma). The racial reconciliation song «When Dinah Held My Hand» segues into a gospel choir singing «Jesus is on the Mainline». Card also includes Maltbie Babcock’s 1901 hymn, «This Is My Father’s World» and a live version of his own 1992 composition «Gomer’s Song», retelling the story of Hosea’s wife. The title track builds on a theme by Antonin Dvorak. Instrumentation hews to Card’s usual quiet acoustic choices suitable for background during personal devotions, mainly guitar and piano, with occasional banjo, and three appearances from the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Album closer «Why Not Change the World» was co-written with Junmo Cho, a linguistics professor in South Korea, and features a choir from his school, Handong Global University.
