Description
Watermarks is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Billy Crockett, independently released on his own labe Walking Angel Records in 1998, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was produced by Billy Crockett. Featuring guest vocals by Bob Bennett, Kelly Willard, Pierce Pettis, and Carolyn Arends, among others.
Dallas singer/songwriter Billy Crockett has toured and recorded with Rich Mullins, and on Watermarks Crockett displays a lyrical master craftsmanship that would’ve done Mullins proud. Nearly all of the 13 songs on this acoustic-oriented disc reflect a poetic and spiritual majesty befitting the title. Crockett’s voice even sounds hauntingly like Mullins on the title track, which weaves funky acoustic and Arabesque textures around a brokeness/redemption theme.
Crockett, who also recalls the likes of Marc Cohn and Don Henley, flows flawlessly on the first four cuts of Watermarks. «Lower Than the Angels» has a ready-for-radio appeal, and a chorus bound to make even the causal listener take pause: “Tell him he’s higher than the monkeys / And under the gun / Tell him he’s better than average / But he ain’t the only one.”
There’s not a single weak cut on Watermarks, though listeners should be advised to drink in this album like a summer sunset. More than half the songs on Watermarks run over five minutes long, making for an ocean sail where the seascape never varies. Crockett sticks to this soft, subdued vocal and musical delivery from the instant he sets out – but that shouldn’t be regarded as a weakness. Like Chris Rice’ Deep Enough to Dream, Billy Crockett’s Watermarks is a project not for those looking to take a pumped-up joyride, but a mellow, meditative voyage. Give Watermarks an hour of your time without interruptions, and it will transport you. [Lou Carlozo, CCM, April 1998]
