Deep Enough to Dream

Description

Deep Enough to Dream is the major label debut album by the American singer and songwriter Chris Rice, released on Rocketown Records in June 1997, distributed by both Word Entertainment and Epic, a division of Sony Music. (Rice self-released his debut effort in 1994, an album entitled Live By Faith.) The album was recorded by Bryan Lenox with Monroe Jones producing. Mixed by James Dineen. Michael W. Smith was executive producer.

If there was such a thing as a CCM version of Trivial Pursuits then this is one man who is destined to become the answer to the question, “Who was the first artist Michael W Smith signed to his new Rocketown label?” And now you’ll be able to answer “Chris Rice”! For his name is the name to remember which shouldn’t be too hard because on the strength of this sonically beautiful debut, he’ll be around for a while! Rice has managed to develop a piano-based, mellow, smooth style that is both compelling and relaxing. Mainly acoustic in nature the mellow moments here are the best. The closing tune «I Need A Hero» is exquisitely vulnerable (and vocally reminiscent of England’s John Martyn), «Hallelujahs» and «My Tree» (a great story song by the way illustrating the unconditional love of Christ) are also on the quieter side without descending into melancholy! On the other side of the coin, there’s the intriguing «Sometimes Love» and the kookie «Clumsy» is a perfect piece of groovy acoustic pop with a powerful encouragement to allow God to complete his work. Mr Rice is even given the chance to rock out on «Good News» but generally he remains unruffled throughout this album. Beneath the perfect acoustic pop stylings, there is a songwriting strength that will hit paydirt with a stonking album in the future. For the moment, this is a good strong debut promising much!
