Description
The Sky’s the Limit is the fourth studio album by the American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Leon Patillo, released on Myrrh Records in 1984, a division of Word. The album was produced by Skip Konte and Leon Patillo. All songs written by Leon Patillo.
The Sky’s The Limit was included among CCM Magazine‘s Top 10 Albums of the Year, voted number eight on a list featuring ten albums released between November 1, 1983 and October 15, 1984. – Leon’s first album to reach the critics’ Top 10, ‘The Sky’s the Limit’, is a masterful collection of pop with a message. Tim A. Smith reviewed the disc in May: “Former Santana lead singer and keyboardist Leon Patillo has made great inroads in contemporary Christian music… adding further credence to his growth as a Christian and his ever-growing popularity as an artist.” According to CCM Magazine, The Sky’s The Limit was the 7th best selling album of 1984 in the contemporary Christian music market.
Former Santana lead singer and keyboardist Leon Patillo has made great inroads in contemporary Christian music through his first four albums. On his latest release, ‘The Sky is the Limit’, Leon adds further credence to his growth as a Christian and his ever growing popularity as an artist.
«I Heard the Thunder» starts the album off on a thumping note. This cut features the classic drum downbeat found in most contemporary soul music today, but is triumphantly joined with Leon’s keyboard wizardry. «Security», one of the strongest cuts on the album, is a beautiful love ballad conveying the simple thought, “With you and me and the Lord above we have security.” Leon sings this one soulfully, expressing the love in his heart for his wife and His Lord.
«Life Is What You Make It» moves with a Caribbean feel through its heavy use of percussion. See if you can detect Leon’s faint background “rap” throughout the instrumental breaks.
Leon lets himself go on the cut «J-E-S-U-S». This jam will have your head bobbing, your feet tapping, and your hands clapping in moments. The highlight of this tune is the call-and-response sequence between Leon and the background singers. «God’s People» resembles something from Star Wars with its spacey, futuristic arrangement.
«Fear Not» is a beautifully orchestrated song of edification, saying “Fear not for the Lord God is with us.” It features a lavishly conducted choral and synthesized string background arrangement. The inspirational title cut expresses the universal theme that we as individuals can do anything, when we put our minds to it, because “the sky is the limit.” Other cuts of notice: the praise-filled «Sing Unto the Lord» and the haunting «Small Still Voice».
Every cut on ‘The Sky Is the Limit’ is strong, both musically and lyrically, making it a rare gem. [Tim A. Smith, CCM, May 1984]
