Givin’ it Straight to You is a gospel album by the American soul, gospel, and R&B singer Dorothy Moore, released on Rejoice Records in 1986, a division of Word. Also manufactured and distributed by A&M Records.
Longtime followers of R&B music should recognize the name Dorothy Moore. She topped Billboard’s black music chart in 1977 with the hit «Misty Blue» and followed it up with the smash «I Believe You» in 1978. Both songs received Grammy nominations.
Recently, Moore has followed the lead of some of her mainstream contemporaries and entered the world of gospel music with the release ‘Givin’ It Straight to You’, an album produced by Kenny Roger’s keyboardist, Steve Glassmeyer.
Moore’s initial gospel project offers a variety of material from different writers. Most of the cuts, however, fall into the “safe” MOR territory that mainstream artists usually enter when they venture into gospel music. «Keep Your Eyes on Jesus» and a cover of the Will Jennings/Joe Sample hit «I’m So Glad I’m Standing Here Today» bear witness to this fact.
When Moore stretches herself vocally, she demonstrates why she was voted Billboard’s Top New Female Artist in 1976. Listen to her soulful, heart-touching vocals on Lionel Richie’s «Jesus Is Love» and the gritty, gut-level R&B feel Moore delivers on the reggae-flavored «Captain of My Ship». Another cut which should attract the fans of traditional black gospel music is the classic «What Is This» on which Moore adds a touch of down-home blues to the arrangement.
