Praise the Lord in Many Voices, Part I

Description

Praise the Lord in Many Voices, sub-titled A Recorded Performance in Carnegie Hall, Part 1, is a multi-artist album released on Avant Garde Records in 1966. It’s a three part series also featuring Part II and Part III.

The two works recorded here are part of an event unique in Carnegie Hall’s 75 years: a highly ecumenical concert of modern sacred music called “Praise the Lord in Many Voices.” The voices were many, the instruments, too; and the varity of praise about as wide as could be imagined. [Excerpt from the album sleeve]

A live concert from Carnegie Hall, side one consists of the choral/folk sounds of the Medical Mission Sisters, joined here by the male Paulist Singers. Good harmonies enhanced by a nice background of classical guitars and a snappy rhythm section, south-of-the-border style. For every 100 LPs of this genre I’ve thrown away, here’s one worth keeping. But the real winner is side two with one of the first vinyl appearances of John Ylvisaker, whose solo LPs on the same label are among the most outstanding examples of early Jesus rock. This session doesn’t quite match those efforts; nevertheless John and band (with Robert Edwin assisting on vocals) deliver a nice mix of bossa nova, samba, hard rock, and gospel blues, highlighted by wife Amanda’s organ playing.
