Voice of the Turtledove

Description

Voice of the Turtledove is an album by the American folk group Simeon Singers, released on GAR (Grubb Associates Recording) in 1974. The album was recorded and mixed by G. Grubb in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Simeon Singers features Kathy Imblum (lead and background vocals), Flora Paulos (lead and background vocals), Dan Forsythe (folk and classical guitars, lead and background vocals), Scott Saari (classical and electric guitars, lead and background vocals), Caryn Wunderlich (flute and background vocals), Dan Lind (piano), Jon Baker (bass), and Chris Gongolas (drums and percussion).

If this were a British private you can bet it would sell in three-digit figures. Coming from America, however, gentle melodic folk groups like the eight-member Simeon Singers tend to be overlooked. Too bad, because Voice Of The Turtledove has some real nice charm at work. Acoustic guitars blend with flute and piano, usually in an artsy finger-picked ballad kind of setting. Mostly originals or obscure covers, along with a rendition of «One In The Spirit» (done in a medley with Kabalevsky’s theme «A Little Song»). Songs like «He Died For Us» and «Sunshine» bring to mind the poignant ballad style of early Children Of The Day. Some basement electric guitar and lively drums bring a heavier edge to «Rainbow Song», while the instrumental «It» flows with a pleasant Fogelberg-ish flair. Recorded in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
