Description
Canvas for the Sun is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Phill McHugh, released on Lamb & Lion Records in 1977, distributed by Sparrow Records. The album was produced by Chris Christian. All songs written by Phill McHugh except “Jimmy’s Song” written by Jim Groth.
Fuller arrangements including synthesizer, organ, male/female backing vocals and periodic soft strings don’t seem to hurt this pleasant follow-up any. Stylistically similar to John Michael Talbot – the orchestral classical overtures flash forward to Troubadour Of The Great King, while some of the acoustic rock and pedal-steeled country recall Talbot’s Sparrow years. Also includes successful attempts at blues-edged rock (the fuzz-equipped «Common Ground»), fragile enchanted ballads («End Of The Rope»), gospel blues («For The Searcher», with a cool electric guitar solo) and slow lounge jazz with vibes and sax («Better To Agree»). The stirring title ballad is more or less sheer perfection. Aims straight for the heart and finds its home. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
