Give It a Try

Description

Give It a Try is the sophomore album by the German-Canadian pop/rock band Deliverance, released in the US on NewPax Records in 1977, distributed by Word. As well released in Canada on the gospel label Image VII and in Germany by Intercord. The album was produced by band members Vern Giesbrecht and Paul Janz. Arranged and conducted by Paul Janz.

Give It A Try is a logical progression from the hymns and gospel songs of To God Be The Glory, to their first adult oriented rock album, Lasting Impressions (1978). Five of the nine songs were written by Paul Janz, one by Herb Rempel, three by Nils Kjellström, one with Ken helping Nils with the lyrics. The music and lyrics are like nothing you’ve heard before. The songs flow into each other like the album is telling a story. The back of the album cover features a testimonial by Joe Moscheo of The Imperials. In it he places Deliverance in the same trend-setting category as The Imperials, Love Song, The Archers, Andrae Crouch, and “the Troubadours” of Christian music: Larry Norman, Barry McGuire, Randy Matthews, and Honeytree.

These six guys are typically smooth and commercially pop-minded, through take note they can pack a pretty decent rock punch when they want to. Big polished clean production including brass on a couple songs. Those overpowering buffed-to-the-core harmonies can be a detraction, especially on the MOR ballads, but on cuts like the fuzz-rocking «Who Are You?» I scarcely notice. The obvious standout would have to be the near 10-minute closing track «Memories In F# Minor» with its symphonic art-rock/art-MOR aspirations, including some vigorous electric guitar. The group worked heavily in Germany and Canada. Most songs written by member Paul Janz. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
