Growing Up: Honeytree’s Best

Description

Growing Up: Honeytree’s Best is a compilation album by the American singer and songwriter Honeytree (a.k.a. Nancy Henigbaum), released on Myrrh Records in 1981, a division of Word.

Looking back over the years since I first met Jesus in the spring of 1970, I can see that these have been my growing up years. Psalms 92: 12, 13 says that a tree planted in the house of the Lord will flourish in the courts of our God. In my life, I have seen that as I am faithful to the Lord and to my church, He raises me up to tell people everywhere about Jesus. If there is one central thing that my musical ministry communicates to people I hope it is this: “Jesus loves the real you.” My prayer is that you can see a little bit of yourself in these songs. – Love, Honeytree [Note on the back of the LP sleeve]

“Best Of” albums are always a bit worrisome; rarely what is labelled “best” really is. Until now, Christian artist Paul Clark was one of few musicians who released an accurate representation of his finer material, but fortunately Honeytree can now be added to the slender list. For instance… «Searchlight», Honeytree’s most well-known rocker, is included. «Diamond in the Rough», an intensely moving tune, must surely be counted in the artist’s top ten. «Heaven’s Gonna Be a Blast»… «Rattle Me, Shake Me»… the nearly decade old «Clean Before My Lord». . . what listener of Jesus music can’t recall at least one of these?

Two excellent new tunes introduce themselves as well, «Heaven’s Mountain Band» and «Known By Heart». The latter ends the LP perfectly, emphasizing the central message of the gospel, that Jesus can only be known through surrender of the heart. Honeytree, despite the years, all her growth in maturity, has never allowed the gospel’s essence to escape her or her music. That makes all the difference in Growing Up.
