Phil Potter

Phil has been singing to a wide audience up and down the country over the past few years – in universities, colleges and schools, churches, hospitales, coffee bars and youth clubs; in fact anything from a Folk Club to a Family Service! Those who have heard his music would agree that Phil is particularly gifted in communicating to both young and old through a thoughtful mixture of the traditional and contemporary. In his songs, he often takes a clear intense gaze on an unfriendely world, and yet one is always drawn on to take a refreshing look at the One who makes it all worthwhile. In brief, Phil’s music is versatile in mood as well as material, reflecting something of the inner joy of a musician whose ‘song is love unknown’.

Over the years, Phil’s ministry has been well complimented, influenced and encouraged by Tim Butlin, who provides much of the backing on this album and who wrote the music for ‘High Street’ and ‘Never Walk Alone’. Apart from ‘My Song Is Love Unknown’, other songs and all lyrics were written by Phil, except ‘Come Along’, composed with Roy Nightingale.

Here then is a collection of new songs to convey something of Phil’s ministry. May it also serve as an open invitation to hear more of him in your own area. [Album liner notes printed on the back of the LP sleeve]

Stirring folk from one of Britain’s finest artist. A very peaceful and meditative work featuring gentle acoustic guitars softly embraced by string synthesizer, piano, electric guitar and glockenspiel, with Phil’s delicate sensitive voice perfectly complementing the dreamy serenity of the music. Phil also plays acoustic guitar and is assisted by additional musicians Tim Butlin, Derek Huff and John Pantry (who also produced the album). Light playful piano moods pleasantly push a couple songs into mellow pop/folk. «Rich Man», «High Street», «In The Darkness», «Communist Love Song», six others. Nice touch of fuzz on «I Need Love». To quote the liner notes: “he often takes a clear intense gaze on an unfriendly world, and yet one is always drawn on to take a refreshing look at the One who makes it all worthwhile.” Same small UK label that released records by Cephas and Manasseh.
