Description

BILL COMEAU – Gentle Revolution. Avant Garde AVS 122 (M)

Bill Comeau’s “Gentle Revolution” is indeed just that. This is an album of handpicked tunes – several of them written by Comeau – which speak of peace, love and togetherness. It is an endearing thing, and Comeau’s gentle voice carries the listener along on a tide of quiet ecstasy. Tunes include, «Turn, Turn, Turn», «Eleanor Rigby» and «Both Sides Now». [Billboard Magazine (Album Reviews/Special Merit Picks), February 7, 1970]

Some cool dreamy and commercially-viable folk/pop sounds here. Comeau’s singing comes across as frail, breathy, even a bit off key, but the Avant Garde musical backing is up to its usual high standards utilizing electric guitar, 12-string acoustic, organ, piano, with harmonica and light orchestration in a couple places, all presented in a subdued manner for a delicate flower power edge. Seven songs written by Comeau plus «Both Sides Now», «Turn Turn Turn», «Eleanor Rigby» and «Suzanne». Reminds me of Gene Cotton or fellow Avant Garder Frank Dumin. Looks like Woodstock hippies on the cover. See also Some Beautiful Day. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
