Description
Big Man is the debut album by the American hip-hop duo Fire Fighters (Dan Delzell and David Wells), self-released on cassette-only in 1986.
From what I can find, this is the first full-length Christian Rap album that was not a kid’s rap album. Several artists had singles or EPs out before this tape. The Rap’Sures came out a year before this, but there is always a debate over whether that counts because it was for kids. Michael Peace’s Rrrock It Right, Rev. Rhyme’s According to Rap, and Roy Suthard’s Plain White Rapper would all be released a year later. The style here is old school rap influenced by Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, and even Run DMC (although they don’t do any of the hard rock hybrid type songs Run DMC was getting known for by now). The music is more minimalistic, mostly played on keyboards (even the scratching sounds like an effect rather than made by a DJ). Sometimes this style is also referred to as electro funk. Don’t know who played on this, but the follow-up tape form 1989 (Committed) shows two guys on the front cover. [Christian Tape Underground, February 16, 2025]
