RRRock it Right

Description

RRRock it Right is the debut album by the American rapper Michael Peace, released on Reunion Records in 1987. The album was produced by Tom Hemby.

Let me tell you ‘bout a man named Michael Peace/ Rapping real def rhymes that never cease – He’s got a new record on the Reunion label/ As a master M.C., he is truly able – His raps are laid on a killer beat/ Tom Hemby’s production is very sweet – He’s got nine tuff raps to make his case/ and some instrumental tracks that are in your face – No cursin’ or cuttin’, but you won’t be bored/ ’cause this homeboy’s rappin’ for the Lord – So put RRRock It Right on your jam box/ and let Michael’s rhymes knock you outta your sox!

If you’re a rap fan, you’ll hear all the tuff stuff you love to groove to – bombastic beat-box rhythms, synthesizer bursts and samples, squonking saxes, tricky stereo panning and grungy, Zeppelin-esque guitar solos. Peace manages to maintain a street credibility, while avoiding the sexual braggadocio and outright profanity often associated with rap. Every rhyme on ‘RRRock It Right’ is in your face. He focuses on his early years («In the Ghetto») and a Christian friend he desires to emulate («Automatic Witness»), and gets off a few jibes at secular B-Boys – “You’ve been rocking on that mike, making everybody dance/ So commit your life to Him, it might be your last chance.” Peace even remade two recent Christian hits, «Heart Trouble» and «Wise Up», in his own inimitable style. But perhaps Michael’s most telling line comes from «In the Ghetto» – “The real ghetto life is inside of you.” Rather than leaving you hanging, he offers the only true solution – «J-E-S-U-S». Peace follows the example of King David (history’s first rapper?) – all his boasts are in the Lord. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, August 1987]
