Worship Revolutions Mix-1, sub-titled Worship Electronica: Today’s most popular worship songs remixed for modern church culture, is a contemporary praise & worship album by the American electronic dance music artist DreamLab feat. various lead vocalists, released by Club Dream Lab in 2009, manufactured in the US and distributed worldwide by Go Global Entertainment. The album was produced by Magellan (a.k.a. Paul Buono).
If only Ibiza and our local clubs would play these tracks. DreamLab have truly revolutionized classic worship songs, from Brooke Fraser’s «Hosanna» to Matt Redman’s «Blessed Be Your Name». It’s a shame that they chose to use Vineyard’s «Breathe» in this album as the electronic version somewhat undermines the power of the lyrics. But it’s the only false step on this successful attempt to recast well known worship songs for clubland. Producer Paul Buono takes songs like «Majestic» and «Mighty To Save» and transforms them while still preserving their essence. The lead into «Hosanna» boasts some amazing synths, including the sound of waves breaking against a shore, building up to an ambient rendition of Brooke Fraser’s song. By the second chorus, the song feels like it has nowhere left to go… that is until you get to the bridge. Intriguingly, the pumping beat and electro mix highlight the vulnerability and humility of the lyrics that are brushed over in the original. Other “worship revolutions” include Tim Hughes’ «Here I Am To Worship», Chris Tomlin’s «Forever» and Graham Kendrick’s «Amazing Love». This whole album is rather like a bacon and chilli jam sandwich – it sounds simply wrong, but in reality, it is surprisingly pleasant to the palate. [Emily Lucas, Cross Rhythms, September 2009]
