Roaring Lambs is a multi-artist project released on Squint Entertainment in June 2000. The disc is a companion piece to the late Emmy Award-winning television producer Bob Briner’s respected, thought-provoking book Roaring Lambs, which challenges Christians to get out from behind the church walls and become culture-shaping influences in society at large.
The album features Over the Rhine‘s «Goodbye», an outstanding evocative song that would appear one year later on their album Films for Radio. Then there is Sixpence None the Richer‘s «The Ground You Shook», an introverted gentil song from Matt Slocum and Leigh Nash features guest vocals by Emmylou Harris (this track would later be included on The Best of Sixpence None the Richer, released in 2004). Then there is Bill Mallonee & Vigilantes of Love‘s «Wondering Where the Lions Are», an excellent cover of the 1979 Bruce Cockburn song. Other good songs are the contributions of Ashley Cleveland & Michael Tait, Steve Taylor, and Burlap to Cashmere. The PFR track was written and arranged by John Mark Painter of Fleming & John.
This follows a now ever-growing list of concept albums in the Christian marketplace. This one is a tribute to author Bob Briner, author of Roaring Lambs, and is stuffed full of the top names in CCM, each singing tracks inspired by the author and his writings. Artists include Jars Of Clay (with Innocence Mission), Sixpence None The Richer, Michael W Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Delirious?, Burlap To Cashmere and Ladysmith Black Mambazo each giving their tribute with totally new material, and to be honest there is not a bad track here, ensuring many hours of great music emerging from your speakers! The best track to my ears is delivered by Ashley Cleveland and Michael Tait (dc Talk) highlighting the author’s admonition to be salt and light to the world.
