Loud, Proud and Born Again is the sophomore album – and third effort over all – by the American (pseudo) hip-hop project The Rap’Sures, released on StarSong Records in 1990, distributed by Sparrow/Star Song Distribution. The album was recorded by Doug Doyle at Neverland Studios in Los Alamitos, California; with The Rap’Sures producing and arranging for ‘In Cog Neat O’ Productions. Mixed by The Rap’Sures at Neverland. (The Rap’Sures feature Tyrone, Darrell & J.J. Washington; a.k.a. two members of Daniel Amos – Terry Scott Taylor and Rob Watson – together with producer/engineer Doug Doyle.) All songs written by The Rap’Sures except tracks 4, 7 (the Petra classic “More Power To Ya“), and 9 (the Farrell & Farrell classic “Get Right Or Get Left“).

Featuring Tyrone Washington on lead vocals and guitar, J.J. Washington on keyboards and synthesizers, and Darrell Washington on drums. Background vocals provided by Darrell & J.J. CCM buffs might know the RapSures hide the identity of Christian rock’s original crazee, DA‘s Terry Taylor. Terry and his mates dreamt up the RapSure persona during the Grandmaster Flash era when most Christians regarded rap with incomprehension. Always primarily a project for kids this album goes the whole hog and is pitched firmly at a 12-year-old mind set. It’s all pretty darn funky and the lyrics are a nice mixture of simple spiritual truth and downright silly (what about the ode to cafeteria food «Lord, Bless This Mess») or a slightly distasteful rap about pimples «Zee Eye Tee». If you want music for kids that doesn’t take the enamel off the teeth of any adult audience this album’s for you. Children’s gospel rap rules.
