Description
Supertones Strike Back is the sophomore album by the American indie-rock/ska band The O.C. Supertones, released on BEC Recordings in June 1997, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. Also marketed and distributed in the UK by Alliance Music. The album was recorded by Steve Kravac and Mike Baumgartner at Westbeach Recorders in Hollywood, California; with Kravac producing. Mixed at A&M Studios in Hollywood.
Generally known as the first Christian ska band, The Supertones (sorry, full name: The Orange County Supertones!) are back with their second album. The first thing I noticed was how different it is to the first album, ‘The Adventures Of The OC Supertones‘. The production of this album is crisper and less raw which gives the songs a more poppy feel. The move from producer Bob Moon to Steve Kravac is exactly what MXPX did for ‘Life In General‘ and in many ways the differences there are parallel to those in the Supertones. What the sound has lost in one aspect has been gained in another. Needless to say, however, this is a brilliant album. As well as having some infectious pop songs, there are also a few harder edged songs like «Unite» and «Supertones Strike Back». The band mix a fun sense of humour with a seriously uncompromising gospel message. The way they ‘utilse’ the music of other bands is hilarious. Listen to the opening Metallica riff, the lyrical play on DC Talk, Unashamed and Wu-Tang Clan. The lyrics are often extremely hard hitting as well as being humble and worshipful: “I know I’m just another Judas/ Kiss your face while I drive the nail through your hand” («Louder Than The Mob»). Ouch! The message is loud and clear right through the album- hate sin, love God! ‘Supertones Strike Back’ should make this band even more popular. This is music that will appeal to just about anyone! Give The Supertones a listen and you’ll discover why. [Jon Wilson, Cross Rhythms, December 1997]
